    Wiccan Politics

Thursday, December 20, 2007, 07:49 AM EST [General]

I found a blogpost on DailyKos, that I thought was interesting. Are Wiccans political? Does your religion affect how you vote? I guess I am still struggling with this idea. I always interpreted freedom of religion as being freedom FROM religion, too. As in "don't put yours on me, and I won't put mine on you, etc." I thought we had risen above these kind of considerations. But the way Romney has been raked over the coals in the media for being a Mormon recently makes me think otherwise.

I guess I am glad that Wicca is still mostly ignored by the rest of society. I hope it stays that way.

    This post really scares me

Remember when they come in the night to nab you or your coven you didnt say" THATS WRONG, HELL NO!"

Ignoring the situation this country is in and not doing anything about it is exactly what happened in Nazi Germany.

    VOTE AGAINST BUSH
    VOTE AGAINST THE CHRISTIANS

who do you think they will attack after their done hunting muslims?
These people have a long history of BURNING us it just didnt go away. Witch hunts still go on, maybe not burnings, but You might get Fire-d.

Contrary to what some folks on here might say, being political is NOT part of being Wiccan. You are absolutly right that freedom of religion is freedom FROM religion. Many of the Wica are political activists, but as private citizens and not in the name of Wicca.

Voting your conscience is important no matter what your religion, and I think that it is important to do so. As our rights get trampled, so will eventually our ability to practice in peace. So, I vote not as a Wiccan but as a person who values my freedom.

I share your sentiments about Wicca remaining out of the public eye, but that is unlikely to happen- not with the media and those that think being the Hidden Children of the Goddess is not good enough. Many want it to become a world religion like Chrisitianity or Islam.

I don't believe that you have to be political to be spiritual, but for me personally, my spirituality plays a big part of how I vote. Maybe it's because I identify as a UU Pagan, but social action is a big part of my belief system. I wouldn't necessarily vote for a candidate based on their religious beliefs. Issues like free speech, the right to choose, and equal rights for all are very tied into my spiritual belief system so I vote and protest and campagin accordingly.

I don't think we can afford to hope to be ignored. One of the reasons that neo-conservatives have gotten so much political power is that they have organized and vote as one voting block. It was not unusual during the last election for a Christian to go to church and hear how God wanted them to vote for Bush. A friend of mine who considers herself very Christian stopped attending her church because of this.

If we hope to take back our country we need to organize with others that may not necessarily believe spiritually as we do, but socially. I believe it is our responsibility as Americans
